The ELN Classrooms: What’s Inside?

The ELN Classrooms 2.0 (Logo & Email)

The ELN Classrooms are virtual classrooms where EnglishLab.Net students study English and other foreign languages online. This article is an illustrated overview of what the classrooms are like.

Version 2.0 of the ELN Classrooms was launched amid the COVID19 pandemic. It had never been the plan, though. We’d been working on version 2.0 for about four years by the time it got ready in early April, 2020, so it is a mere coincidence.

You can study English for such exams as IELTS, FCE, CAE or CPE online in the ELN Classrooms,

When a user logs in,

she finds herself exploring the Dashboard:

  • The middle part shows today’s sessions. If there is an active one, the user will see the enter button.
  • The last few sessions or rather buttons leading to their navigable summaries with learning objects and note are shown on the left (provided the user has attended some lessons already).
  • Any planned future sessions, or rather their preview buttons are displayed on the right.

What are sessions in progress like on the inside?

Once logged in the classroom, the student sees her fellow students’ and tutor’s avatars on the left and the board showing learning objects (LO) on the right.

Above the board there is a dictionary search box, whereas below the board there are session notes.

Once the lesson has started, the tutor and the students can take notes and navigate the slides (LO). What’s new compared with version 1.0 is that now the students can also take notes, and the latter can be either shared or hidden from the other participants. This has numerous highly beneficial methodological affordances.

The tutor can make use of many different types of content during class, such as embedded audio or video recordings, text, pictures, and/or interactive quizzes.

If necessary, the tutor can embed a scrollable pdf.

It is also possible to make use of interactive clickable content, such the good old Hot Potatoes Quizzes. Who would have thought, yeah. We have also put about 200 such quizzes online for everyone to use for free, so you can enjoy doing them, too.

Online lessons can be enriched with listening practice, just like any other conventional onsite lesson. SoundCloud player embed codes make playing classroom audio very easy for both the teacher and students: just click the play button when needed and forget about sending any bulky files back and forth.

YouTube videos are also easily embeddable. What is very convenient is that if the tutor or her students want to add an audio or a video to the class notes in the middle of the lesson, it is also possible.

The ELN Classrooms are particularly well suited to teaching various foreign languages.

As of June 2020, we are able to help you to learn English (any level), Russian (any level), Ukrainian (any level), French (beginner to intermediate), German (beginner level), Polish (beginner level), or Italian (beginner to intermediate).

We are likely to grow as a school over the years, and we are hiring talented e-tutors, so do email us if you are in search of a qualified language tutor even if the language you want to learn is not listed – we may well be able to provide the service at the time of your enquiry.
